I love red velvet cakes.  I've loved it even before the craze hit Manila.  It's not very hard to look for RVC nowadays, but when I first fell in love with it, I had to actually go out of my way to have these delivered to me, just to get my sweet tooth fix.  Now with the popularity of this dessert continuously rising, I've had the chance to try different cakes and compare them with each other,  Here you go:

UCC (180php per mini-cake) - Delicious RVC.  Very cream cheesy and the cake is also very moist, and not too sweet.  The white chocolate curls on top is a nice touch.

Cukay's (800php per large cake or 180php for 1 dozen mini cupcakes, I've forgotten how much the regular cupcakes cost) - A tad too sweet, but the cake is moist, even after being refrigerated for almost a week.

Cookbook Kitchen's Scarlet Cake (90php per mini slice) - Not as red as the other red velvet cakes, and the cake itself was a bit too dry.  Frosting is kinda interesting, with the cocoa powder sprinkled on top.  Nothing special, but cheap compared to UCC (and rightfully so.)

Rosemarie's Cakes (700php per cake) - another GREAT find in the Eastwood Weekend Market.  This is my favorite so far: frosting not too sweet and not too cream cheesy, and moist, moist cake.  And it's cheaper than Cukay's cake!

Gigi's (40php per cupcake) - Very moist, and frosting is not too bad.  This might be my favorite commercial cupcake so far.  But I prefer Gigi's chocolate cupcakes to this.  Her chocolate cupcakes are the best for me.

A vendor from the Eastwood Weekend Market that I can no longer remember - Unremarkable cake.  I can't even remember how this tastes like.  Definitely did not make me crave for some more.

Crumbs (48php/per cupcake) - did not like this too much.  Did not taste nor feel like red velvet cake for me.  It looks nice but that's about it.  Read my thought on this here.

Lara's Cupcakes (350php per dozen of BIG cupcakes) - not as red as the other cupcakes but these taste good, and there's abundance of cream cheese frosting.  The cake is also moist, complements the frosting really well.

Carol's Cupcakes (Not for sale, although if she does decide to get into the business, she will have a loyal customer in me.) - These are simply the BEST red velvet cupcakes I've ever tasted... to think that when she made that batch, it was her first time.  Words cannot explain how good these cupcakes are... they are HEAVENLY... PERFECT in every way.  It's been our request for her to make some whenever we have a get together. :)

More cupcakes / cakes to come.  Any recommendations will be very welcome. :)

Looks like I was not the only parent who the same sentiment that finding costumes from the Chronicles of Narnia will be challenging.  Some parents from my baby's class brought this up (thank you, whoever you are!) so now, we are trying to decide between the following:

  1. The Chronicles of Narnia
  2. Harry Potter
  3. Mulan
For me, I'd love to have the Harry Potter theme simply because it's my all-time favorite series.  And since the female costumes are simple, there are so many ways to go about it.  Here are the possible costumes for my baby:

So what do you think would be perfect for Phoenix? :)

I am dreaming right now... I am dreaming of going to Japan and exploring both Tokyo and Kyoto.  I wanted to go next year.  But based on the research that I had been doing on Japan expenses, I don't think I can come up with enough money to be able to go there by spring.  But since dreams are free, in the meantime, here are the things that I have to do when I am there:

Tokyo
  • Go to Tokyo Disneyland!  I have it as a personal mission to be able to go to all Disneyland parks in the world.  I saw some pics of Mickey and Minnie dressed in traditional Japanese outfit, and I'd love to see that in person.

  • Visit the Shinkuju Gyoen National Garden and have my picture taken with all those cherry blossom trees as the backdrop.  Would even be better if the timing is when the sakura trees have started shedding their blossoms.

  • Go to the Meiji Shrine.

  • Wear a kimono and have a full blown photoshoot (hahaha!).  Would love to wear the kimono below, even if they are wedding kimono.  Plus points for the second kimono for having sakura design.

  • Go to Sanrio Puroland.  Considering how much I love Hello Kitty, I think that this will be a heavenly experience for me.  I am scared to think of how much money I'll get to spend just on the shopping part.  And I'd probably have a thousand pics just on this alone.

  • Visit Tokyo Tower.  I guess that this has been spurred by my love of the anime Rayearth.  Would love to take pics of the citylights as well.

These are the things that I have in mind for now that I should never EVER miss when I get there.  Will add more as I complete my research on Tokyo.

I did not like this cupcake. It claims to have cream cheese frosting but the frosting tastes like buttercream. It is sacrilege to use buttercream on red velvet, in my own opinion.

These are not cheap too. For almost 50php per cupcake, I was expecting more than just buttercream. Definitely not good value for money.

So no, i am never gonna buy these again. Simply not worth it...
